Historic Breakthrough Between Israel and the United Arab Emirates

President Trump announced on August 13th that Israel and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have agreed to establish full diplomatic ties as part of a deal brokered by Trump. This is the third peace deal Israel has made with an Arab nation since Israel became a state in 1948. Trump is calling this agreement the “Abraham Accord” reminding us of the three religions founded in the Middle East with Abraham at their core belief systems.

Because this deal has been brokered, Israeli Prime Minister and President Trump hope that other Arab and Muslim countries will follow the UAE's lead. One of the benefits for Muslims is that they can now pray at the historic Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem, the third holiest site in Islam.

The deal isn’t a perfect deal, but what deal is? Deals are compromises. The agreement suspends the controversial plans Israel held to annex large parts of the West Bank, which Palestinians have had their eyes on for part of a future state.

According to Voice of America News, “A spokesman for U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres says Guterres ‘welcomes this agreement, hoping it will create an opportunity for Israeli and Palestinian leaders to re-engage in meaningful negotiations that will realize a two state-solution in line with relevant U.N. resolutions, international law and bilateral agreements.’"

Not everyone is happy about this agreement. Of course, the Palestinians are angered by this brokered deal calling it “treason.” Palestinians are urging other Arab countries not to consider any peace deals with Israel.
