Yoav - Eyewitness in Sderot to the Rocket Attacks Today

Yoav Near the Gaza Border

Hi, this Yoav, writing from my apartment in Sderot.

I had a rough day. I woke up at 5:30 from the sound of rockets flying over my head (they sound like small jets) followed by a worried phone call from my dear Mom.

Since then, almost 200 rockets (and still counting) have been fired into israel, and sent me running time after time to the bomb shelter.

School was canceled of course. But it's not like I can stay home and do homework either, because it’s really hard to be immersed in any project while fearing a rocket attack that can happen and does happen every few minutes. It becomes scary to even go to the bathroom, shower, listen to music - life just stops.

So today was a lot of nothing. Just sitting around and waiting for the siren to go off.

Now it’s one thing for me, a 24 year old man who completed a military service and has been working part time in security since, to go through all this. Yes I’m stressed and frightened, but I can handle it.

However, it’s a completely different story for children to live under a fear of death. Today a little girl from Sderot underwent so much trauma and stress while running to the shelter, to the point she ended up passing out. She is currently hospitalized in a severe condition.

Most kids worry about homework assignments, bullies, and bedtime curfews. But children in Sderot need to worry about not making it into a bomb shelter on time. Every few minutes.

Eventually, I figured I’m not going to give in to terrorism and decided to go get some milk and eggs so I can make breakfast and move on with my day. To my surprise and pride, the streets of Sderot were full of people, cars and buses were going about, and the supermarket was packed.

The people of Sderot are super tough, and it takes a little more than a few rockets to break them.

I pray that we won’t need to express our strength and endurance, and that this round of rockets will end with good results for Israel.
