Sketches From the Book of Revelation
Song For Israel offers many Bible Studies. We are currently going through the Book of Revelation and artist Ray Hart has sketched his rendition of each chapter. Hover over the image to read his comments about his artwork.
Revelation 4 gives a description of God's throne room. It says "He Who was sitting was like a jasper stone and a sardius in appearance." These stones are yellowy-red. At first, taking the description literally, I drew God as a gem. As if glowing around the jasper stone, is the emerald green rainbow. I envisioned the throne as a golden gusher, liquid, and moving, yet supporting He Who is sitting on it. The back of the throne is like a splash of liquid gold. I added streaks of red shining with rays of red energy bursting from it. The 24 thrones surrounding His throne is surrounded by 24 thrones and are shapes that are connected together as well as to God's throne. Their crowns are like golden drops. You can see the lightning coming out of the throne. The seven lamps of fire which are the seven spirits of god are different colors , giving each one its own identity. This entire scene is sitting on water with the red glow reflecting in it. The four living creatures are drawn very small compared to the throne as they float around it.
There is so much subject matter to draw from in Revelation 5. I wanted to do something I have not seen and that I thought no one in our study would do, so I chose the scroll in the right hand of God. On each of the seals is the Alpha & Omega symbol. I also showed what looks like blood being poured in at the top of the scroll and coming out of the bottom. In my mind, this is the blood of Jesus that was used to purchase this scroll.
Once again, everyone pictures the horsemen and I wanted to do waht I haven't seen. Below is the earth, showing the sea with an island and the mainland with mountains above. In the sky, the sun is black and the moon is red. The stars are falling and sky is torn. I thought "then what is behind the sky?" My conclusion was "the outer darkness!" so, this is what is illustrated here.
I sketched a woman with the Alpha & Omega seal on her forehead.
You can see the earth with the land on fire and a great mountain falling from the sky. It is hitting the ocean and the splash is blood.
I ran out of time to draw this before class, so I drew it with a pencil during the BibleyStudy. I just drew it as I read it. I would imagine these are quite small creatures. However, they would be terrifying to look at with these features.
This sketch was also drawn during the study. The angel has one foot on the land and the other on the sea. In his right hand is this tiny little book. I drew his footing backwards--his right foot should be on the sea and his left on the land.
You can see God's hand poking through the clouds and calling the two witnesses, who are flying up to the clouds. All their enemies are below watching.
During the Renaissance period, many artists painted scenes from the Bible with people wearing clothing of the artist's time. I wanted to do drawings depicting the scene with people wearing what is worn in today's Western culture. With this illustration, the woman is wearing something you see you ladies wearing on our streets today. Of course, she is pregnant and there is a crown on her head made up of twelve stars. So many traditional depictions of this image show the lady standing on a crescent moon. However, I wanted to show a complete moon. The red dragon has only one head and it should have had seven. You can see the stars being scooped by his tail.
Here, the first part of verse one is shown. This drawing confused every one in my study. We know the dragon is the "Anti-Christ," so I showed him as a man in a sharp red suit, standing on the sh ore. He has a red tie, representing the death and blood spilled by this evil man.
I really enjoyed drawing this one! Jesus is sitting on a cloud with a crown on His head and a sickle in His hand.
This is an illustration of the heavenly tabernacle with its door open and bright light shining out. The seven figures are the seven angels--I showed them as having a flame coming from each, showing that these angels could be the same seven angels from before God's throne.
This sketch shows a person who has the mark of the beast on his forehead. Something from a bowl is being poured on him, causing much pain and sores on his body.
This time I got the beast correct, having seven heads and ten horns. I dress the woman in a short skirt and top to show her as a prostitute. She obviously is a different woman from the one in chapter 12. Notice that she has a gold cup in her hand.
This shows Babylon being destroyed in one hour--maybe something like an atomic bomb does the job.
This was the first thing that popped into my mind when I read this verse. God is just dropping the beast and the false prophet into the Lake of Fire.
I started this sketch in pencil and I liked how it looked, so I didn't want to ink it. Illustrated is Jesus on the great white throne with the Alpha & Omega logo on the back of it. This is one of my favorites in this series.
As an architectural designer, I have given a lot of thought as to how the New Jerusalem will look. Everyone else describes it as a cube, but if it is a cube, then then why is there a wall around it? How could there be a wall around it , unless it is away from the structure? In geometry, there are three shapes that have the height, depth and width--the cube, the pyramid and the sphere. I ruled out the cube cause of the wall surrounding the city. The sphere is obviously not correct as John would have said it was ball-like. So, the pyramid made the most sense to me. It fits the description and there is room for a wall around it.
What caught my attention about this chapter was all the familiar phrases. So, I drew the Alpha & Omega symbol and wrote many of those phrases from the entire Book of Revelation around it.
