UN Shows Palestinian Favor
You have already heard the news…the UN General Assembly voted overwhelmingly in favor of granting the Palestinian Authority (P.A.) “non-member observer” status. The Obama administration opposed the U.N.’s affirmation of the P.A.’s demands. This show of support from the UN only is in direct defiance to the 1993 Oslo Accord and encourages the Palestinians to take continued steps toward full member status.
The Oslo Accords were an attempt in 1993 to resolve the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict. It was the first face-to-face agreement between the government of Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO). They were signed in Washington, D.C. in the presence of the PLO chairman Yassar Arafat, the then Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and US President Bill Clinton. They were also signed by Mahmoud Abbas for the PLO and Foreign Minister Shimon Peres for Israel. The UN has not taken the negotiations off the tables between the two parties in conflict and has assumed their own position for them. This will hinder future negotiations for them.
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton blasted the United Nations General Assembly Thursday for voting to recognize Palestine as a nonmember state. "I want to say a few words about the unfortunate and counterproductive resolution at the United Nations General Assembly," Clinton said at an event hosted by Foreign Policy magazine in Washington D.C. She continued with: "it places further obstacles in the path of peace. We have been clear that only through direct negotiations between the parties can the Palestinians and the Israelis achieve the peace that they deserve.”
It is a concern that the United States has been supporting the Palestinians financially over the past 3 years (to the tune of $2 billion in aid), while they continue to attack Israel on a regular basis. As supporters of Israel, this seems to be a contradiction for the US to financially support them. I question the wisdom of continued financial support to the enemy of Israel when our own economic situation continues to spiral out of control.
We will continue to stand united with Israel, acknowledge Israel’s sovereignty, and advocate Jerusalem as Israel’s God-ordained, undivided capital.
