President Trump called for the US to Recognize Israeli Sovereignty over the Golan Heights
President Donald Trump called for the US to recognize Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights. President Trump and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had been discussing this topic over the last few weeks. Of course, a statement of support like this would help boost Netanyahu’s election campaign. Israeli elections are slated for April 9th.
US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, a professed Christian, suggested in an interview that President Donald Trump may have been sent by God to save the Jewish people. He also said he was “confident that the Lord is at work here.”
Some say that a recognition like this, even though it was an informal one, could end up making a volatile area of the world even more unstable. Trump’s next step is to push a motion on Capitol Hill for a formal recognition of the Golan to be under Israeli sovereignty.
Israel captured the Golan Heights from Syria in the 1967 Six-Day War and extended Israeli law to the territory in 1981. But the United States and the international community have long considered it Syrian territory under Israeli occupation.
In recent years, Israel has maintained that its control over the Golan is essential to preventing the Syrian Civil War from nearing its borders.
“The message that President Trump has given the world is that America stands by Israel,” Netanyahu said. “We have a Purim miracle here.”
